Crepes with Tomatoes and Butter Hazelnuts

By Erin Alderson Post sponsored by the French Ministry of Agriculture. See below for more details.
One of my first forays into cooking was for my school’s international dinner night. I was in French class and within the first few weeks of class, I became obsessed with French culture. I thought the language and the art was (and still is) beautiful but the food, oh the food. There’s nothing quite like a meal of French food shared around a table of friends and family (plus any given day I’d gladly take a croissant and coffee for breakfast).
And so, these crepes are a bit of …read more

Black Bean Burgers with Spicy Mayonnaise

By Sally Vargas Once upon a time, I ran a vegetarian restaurant in a college town, and one of its signature dishes was the “Big Veg.” The Big Veg was a scratch-made soy veggie burger.
As such, it was pretty good for its time, but it needed some serious updating. These days, I want something better than “pretty good.”

BLW for Beginners: What is Baby Led Weaning?

By Becca @ Amuse Your Bouche When Eden was born I assured you that Amuse Your Bouche wouldn’t become a baby food blog, and I’m sticking to that promise! This post may be baby-related, and there are one or two more Baby Led Weaning posts in the works, but that’ll be it – so if you’re entirely uninterested in babies, don’t worry! I’ll probably have some kind of cheese / bean / spinach / pasta recipe coming soon (quite possibly all four at the same time).

But since Eden’s been on solids for more than 7 months now, and she’s doing really well, this seems like a …read more

Strawberry & Vanilla Chia Seed Jam Recipe

By Jacqueline Meldrum Have you heard of chia seed jam? I’m sure you have, it’s been popular for a couple of years now, but have you made any?I’ve been meaning to try some of this simple strawberry jam for such a long time. I used to make a lot of different traditional jams. Strawberry and peach jam, Scottish raspberry jam, caramelised nectarine and apricot jam, which is a personal favourite and mango and orange peel jam to name a few.Traditional Jam vs Chia Seed JamThe trouble with traditional jam is that it has a lot of sugar. That doesn’t trouble me too much …read more

Saving the Season: 3-Ways with Sweet Corn

By Erin Alderson Living in California now for over 5 years, I’ve learned that most food produced here is just as good (if not better) than most any place else. California tomatoes, olive oil, wine, stone fruit, beans, and grains occupy a majority of our meals. However, and I’ve had arguments with people about this, the Midwest has the best sweet corn. Give me Illinois peaches & cream sweet corn any day.
Of course, I’m not so picky that I’ll refuse California sweet corn. It’s still delicious and I inevitably end up with an abundance (the $4/1 price is just too good). While I …read more

S’mores Pie

Ricotta Toast with Butter-Fried Peppers

By Erin Alderson I’ve noticed an increase of toast offerings at local coffee shops. Avocado, vegetables, and fruit are all popular items but what caught my eye at the last coffee shop was the ricotta toast. Good ricotta is delicious (and better yet, it’s actually quite simple to make at home). Add it to toast and you have one delicious breakfast. Take it sweet (peaches, pears, berries) or take it savory, like this ricotta toast with peppers.
So why peppers? This time of year is the best for peppers, especially my favorite: Jimmy Nardello. Most of the non-bell varieties have amazing flavor. I’ve given …read more

Homemade piada (easy Italian flatbreads)

By Becca @ Amuse Your Bouche Guys! I made bread! From scratch! Only flatbreads, mind – I still consider baking with yeast to be my #1 fear in life – but still, homemade bread! These homemade piada really couldn’t be easier to make – if I can make them successfully, anyone can.
If you’re not familiar with piada (a.k.a. piadina), they’re simple Italian flatbreads that can be stuffed with all kinds of fillings, both sweet and savoury. I went for a classic Italian combination – creamy mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, and fresh basil, along with some avocado and a few salad leaves. It was a brilliant lunch.

Pouding Chômeur – This Unemployed Man’s Pudding Isn’t Cheap

By foodwishes@yahoo.com (Chef John) This Pouding Chômeur, which translates to “unemployed man’s pudding,” is one of your more ironically named recipes, since the main ingredients aren’t cheap. The good news is you probably don’t want to eat this more than a few times a year anyway, so it shouldn’t break the budget. If you use a bigger baking dish than I did, and pour over all the maple cream syrup, your cake should float over a pool of what will eventually be your sauce. If you just use a deep pie dish like me, then you’ll have to serve the extra sauce later, …read more

Loaded Summer Veg Burger with Fried Egg

By Erin Alderson Post sponsored by Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs. See below for more details.
I feel like I’ve truly hit adulthood in the past few years, marked by a love of runny eggs. I could easily eat a ghee-fried egg and toast for breakfast every morning, just swap in and out some fresh produce depending on the season. While I know runny eggs aren’t for everyone, for me they are the highlight of a meal.
Beyond just the egg, I’ve been fascinated by the concept of putting eggs on items that don’t traditionally get eggs. For breakfast, a solid bowl of oats topped …read more
