Photo Essay: Meals on Wheels Star Chefs and Vintners Gala 2018 (part 2)

By Irvin The second of two photo essays for the San Francisco Meals on Wheels Star Chefs and Vintners Gala fundraiser of 2018.

As always, it’s the chefs behind the food that are the real heroes at an event like the San Francisco Meals on Wheels Star Chefs and Vintners’ Gala event. Getting a chance to peak behind the curtain and see the hard work that goes into the gorgeous and delicious food is always a treat. Almost as much as eating the food itself! With more than 900 guests and 100 San Francisco Bay Area chefs working hard, the food they created …read more

Cheesy Roast New Potatoes with Wild Garlic

By Karen Burns-Booth Cheesy Roast New Potatoes with Wild Garlic – This recipe is so easy to make and takes advantage of two seasonal stars of Spring, Jersey Royal potatoes and Wild Garlic. It’s made a little more decadent by the addition of cheese which melts over the roast potatoes – and who doesn’t love cheesy potatoes.

with
Tesco Jersey Royal New Potatoes

I love new potatoes and when spring comes they feature on my kitchen table as soon as they appear in the shops and greengrocers and right up until they finish. Jersey Royals are my favourite and I was pleased to see that our …read more

Canadian Butter Tarts

By Riz You may not know it, but Canadian butter tarts are a national obsession: that perfectly flaky shell, that sweet, buttery, caramel filling, all that melt-in-your-mouth goodness, and the great raisin debate…who could resist!

You don’t have to be Canadian to enjoy the perfect Canadian Butter Tart. For those of you that haven’t yet been able to experience this delicious dessert, it’s similar to a Pecan Pie. However, the filling in Butter Tarts is typically a little runnier. (Oh, and you know, pecans aren’t a necessary component in a butter tart recipe!)

Instant Pot Iced Tea – 3 Ways {Gluten-Free, Keto, Paleo, Vegan}

By Bintu It is the summer. Kind of. So, we make Iced Tea. More specifically we make Instant Pot Iced Tea. Yeap, you heard that right. Instant Pot Iced Tea.
And you will love making this Instant Pot Iced Tea recipe as it requires only 3 ingredients (although you can add much, much more) and can be made ahead of time and kept chilling in the fridge until needed.
Plus, since everything goes in at the same time, it is so, so much more hands off than made-on-the-stove-top iced tea and the results are guaranteed.

Grain-Free Butter Bread – Going Full Keto

By foodwishes@yahoo.com (Chef John) I’ve always wanted to try making one of these grain-free loaves, and since I’ve received tons of food wishes for it, I decided to finally give it a go. I very slightly adapted this recipe from one I found at Keto Connect, where they call it the “Best Keto Bread.” Since I basically stole their recipe, I decided not to take their name too, and went with the hopefully appetizing sounding, grain-free butter bread. Here is the link to the original recipe, and I welcome you to check it out, since they give a lot of tips, as well as …read more

Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake Donuts

By Megan Gordon We have a great vegan donut shop here in Seattle called Mighty O, and when out of town guests come to visit, my husband and I like to bring them in to check it out. Sometimes it can take a little arm-twisting (no, really, I swear they’re good!), and I get it: I’ve had my fair share of ho-hum vegan baked goods.
But these donuts are truly exceptional because they taste like a traditional donut you ate while growing up as a kid. The texture is spot on—super tender and light.
So, I figured it was time to try my hand at …read more

Citrusy sweet, easy to make, can be whipped up in a jiffy three different ways (Instant Pot Orange Chicken, stove top Orange Chicken, slow cooker Orange Chicken), packed with protein… what’s not to love?
Much like my Chinese Chicken Salad (in which you can use this Orange Chicken if you’d like), this recipe is bound to become one of your favourite fakeaways.

8 Compendium Cookbooks to Have on Hand

By Erin Alderson As I approach the 11 year (!) mark for this site, I decided it was time to branch out a bit from sharing recipe after recipe. Over the years, I’ve amassed notes, ideas, methods, and books that rarely get shared (unless you happen to hold a conversation with me). And so, I thought it time to share some of my favorites from over the years.
I could have started with a different list because I realize this post isn’t going to be for everyone, but I wanted to share books that were my go-to. I have a huge cookbook collection but …read more

One pot vegetarian chilli and rice bake

By Becca @ Amuse Your Bouche Vegetarian chilli and rice is one of my favourite dinners. It’s hearty and filling, but can also feel summery if you lighten it up with a nice big salad. It’s sooo delicious – I think I could eat Mexican food every single day without getting bored. And it’s actually pretty healthy too, with lots of veggies and protein-rich beans (just don’t think too hard about all that cheese and sour cream you stick on top…).
To make my old favourite even easier to prepare, I thought I’d make an oven-baked version. This vegetarian chilli and rice bake is all done in …read more

Photo Essay: Meals on Wheels Star Chefs and Vintners Gala 2018 (part 1)

By Irvin The first of two photo essays for the San Francisco Meals on Wheels Star Chefs and Vintners Gala fundraiser of 2018.

I am always in awe of the annual San Francisco Meals on Wheels Star Chefs and Vintners’ Gala event. With over 200 volunteers for the event, this year’s gala raised 3.3 million dollars! That’s enough to feed 660,000 homebound seniors. As always, AJ and I were lucky to attend the event, take photos, meet the chefs, watch them prepare the food, and, of course, eat and drink until we couldn’t eat and drink any more. Here’s a sample of the …read more

Blueberry and Lemon Oaty Breakfast Bars

By Jacqueline Meldrum You’ve probably heard me say this before. I’m not the person who eats breakfast every morning. I know I should but I’m just not ready for anything until mid morning. It’s fine eating breakfast late on days off, but on mornings where I’m heading to work I’m just not ready to eat before I leave the house. That’s where a portable snack like these blueberry and lemon oaty breakfast bars come in. I can enjoy these later in the morning with a cuppa and I’m content until lunchtime rolls around, even if it’s a late lunch. Now apart from the oats …read more

Cherry Hand Pies

By Nick Evans It’s a small thing, but when I was about eight years old, I remember my parents letting me occasionally snag a cherry hand pie from the gas station when we filled up. It was a special treat, for sure, but one that I eventually grew out of because I found the packaged cherry hand pies to be too sweet.
Good news, though! I’m an adult now and I can make my own cherry pies—ones that have a better balance of sweet and tart flavors.

Meal Plan for May Week 5

By Megan Gordon This month, Megan Gordon is back with us sharing her weekly meal plans! Megan is a writer and recipe developer living in Seattle, WA, the author of Whole Grain Mornings, and mom to a 2-year-old. Please welcome Megan!
Memorial Day weekend is here, and with it comes some extended time off for many of us. And if your family is anything like ours, it’s also the unofficial start of grilling season!
I’m spending Saturday and Sunday sprucing up the backyard: weeding, dusting off the patio furniture, and maybe if I’m feeling inspired, trying to repair our wobbly fence (this may be an …read more

Grilled Root Beer Beef – Almost as Good as an Ice Cream Float

By foodwishes@yahoo.com (Chef John) I’ve used something very close to this root beer marinade for lamb several times, and had great success, so I’ve been eager to try it with some skewered beef, which didn’t come out quite as well, but could have. Please, let me explain. Since lamb has a stronger, “gamier” taste, the sweetness of this treatment works perfectly, but I thought it was a little too much for the beef. So, below in the ingredients list, I’ve made a few adjustments to the honey amount, as well as acidity level. The beauty of a recipe like this is they’re very easy …read more

Blueberry Pitcher Margaritas

By Garrett McCord I think we’ve all seen cocktails that get out of hand with creativity, and we’ve probably all encountered when a margarita gets a bit too crazy.
I’m thinking about margaritas made with wonky ingredients like bubblegum, fish sauce, or chocolate. I think the worst I ever saw was a dill-passionfruit flavored “margarita” where the tequila was swapped out for vodka.
Vodka! Can you imagine?!

Tofu 101: How to cook tofu that doesn’t suck

By Becca @ Amuse Your Bouche My ‘how to’ blog posts are always super popular (how to cook halloumi perfectly; how to make a perfect baked potato; how to make perfect roast potatoes), so this time I thought I’d focus on an ingredient that a lot of people have trouble with: tofu! Millions of people around the world love tofu, but also millions don’t, and part of the reason is that when it’s not cooked properly, it can end up a soggy, spongy mess. I have definitely had my share of rubbish tofu, but over the years I’ve found a method that always works well to …read more
