21 Weeknight Vegetarian Dinners

By Erin Alderson With kids starting back to school and life falling into a new normal, dinners often rushed (or on the road). I grew up in a family where both my parents worked until 5 and I often had after school activities. Dinners were never our strong area. Now that I have a child of my own, I put an emphasis on it. They’re not elaborate and often they are wedged in between toddler play-sessions. However, they are there and I make sure we sit down almost every night. The recipes below are the foundation to our quick, weeknight meals. I like …read more

Cucumber Soup

By Elise Bauer Every year I plant cucumbers in my garden. And every year, my one plant takes over the bed (climbing over trellises put in place for other vegetables) and showers me with a daily supply of lovely cucumbers.
This is all well and good, as long as I remember to pick them daily. As careful as I can be, hunting for cucumbers in the tangle of leaves and vines, I do miss them occasionally, only to discover a monster cuke hiding perfectly camouflaged under a leaf.
Like zucchini, left to their own devices, cucumbers will grow to ginormous proportions, resulting in a thick-skinned, …read more

Back to School Gooey Chocolate Cake

By Jacqueline Meldrum We have a tradition in our house. I started it when Cooper started school and we continue on with it each year. On Cooper’s first day back at school we make chocolate cake together. Not not in the morning! You’re having a laugh. Do you know how mad the first day of school is?Of course English schools break up later and the children are starting back next week, so I’m hoping when I share Cooper’s Gooey Chocolate Cake it might start a tradition in another home.Last year we walked into town after school and spent way too long in Waterstones …read more

Honey and sherry glazed roast vegetables three ways

By Helen Delicious honey and sherry glazed roasted vegetables are the starting point for several different dishes. Cook once eat three times!

Aside from eat an extra portion of vegetables with every meal, one of my food mantras is cook once and eat at least twice. Meal prep can be boring and anything that can make it easier, especially after a busy day at work, and help you to eat a better diet has to be a good thing?

Sourdough Bread: Part 1 – Let’s Get This Started

By foodwishes@yahoo.com (Chef John) Welcome to part one of a two part video series for how to make sourdough bread, with nothing more than flour and water. If you’re thinking I already did this before, well, we did, sort of. I did a multi-part series for this long ago, but it was horribly shot, confusing, and the results weren’t good. Other than that, it was fine. Anyway, thanks to an amazing refresher course from Northwest Sourdough (which I highly recommend you check out, and subscribe to), I decided to take those videos down, and do an updated, 2-part recipe. There’s really nothing like homemade …read more

Feast Portland-Get Ready to Eat

By makemendgrow There are few moments in life where I have been completely and utterly full, but still longing to eat more, to savor just one more bite of congee, or perfectly cooked lamb, or just one more sip of rum punch out of a fresh cracked coconut. “Just one more taste!”, my heart and my mouth beg! My stomach gives in, hesitantly.
This was Feast Portland last year, and if you checked out my Instagram feed that rainy weekend last September or read my recap, you recall how I fit in some of the best food a gal can get her mouth …read more

Falafel and Apple Salad Sandwich Recipe

By Jacqueline Meldrum I don’t share many sandwich recipes, but I seem to make plenty of them and I’m always looking for new ideas, so I figured you might enjoy some new sandwich recipes too.I often add falafel to sandwiches and wraps and this falafel and apple salad recipe went down really well. Graham and I both really enjoyed it. Needless to say Cooper would never eat this. He’s funny with it comes to sandwiches. He likes them plain. He will eat a sandwich with peanut butter and jam, peanut butter and Nutella, butter and jam, Oh and he will eat falafel on …read more

Slow and Low Country Ribs

By Hank Shaw When it comes to the grill or barbecue, I defer to my colleague Hank, especially when it concerns meat. Here he shows us how to cook pork country ribs, slow and low. A favorite from the archives! ~Elise
Country ribs. Big slabs of porky goodness cut from the shoulder of the hog. Sold boneless or bone-in, these are nothing like a rack of ribs. They are pork logs, laced with fat, and require slow, low-temperature cooking to become delicious.
That’s the downside: You can’t do a fast country rib.
The upside is that they are all meat, so you only need one to …read more

51 vegetarian lunchbox ideas

By Becca @ Amuse Your Bouche September is nearly upon us! Which means the summer is coming to a close, and it’s time for a new school year. My husband works in schools, so despite not having stuck to an academic timetable myself for over 5 years, I still think of September as back-to-school time. And for a lot of people, that means new stationery (I have been known to write a diary purely so I have an excuse to buy new ones), new shoes (school shoe shopping was always the worst), and the need for new vegetarian lunchbox ideas!

If you’re sending your kids back to …read more
